How to file a cyber crime complaint-

The complaint for cyber crimes is registered with the cybercrimes cells. The complaint can be filed through both online as well as offline medium. Cybercrimes come under the global jurisdiction, which means they can be registered with any of the cybercrimes cells in India.

  • How to file complaint offline-

  • The victim of a cyber crime can file a written complaint in the nearest cybercrime cell or in any of the cybercrime cells around the country.

  • A written complaint would be addressed to the Head of the Cybercrime cell and following informations are required to be provided as well-

  2. Contact details

  3. Mailing address

  • Other documents which are required to be attached depend upon the type of the cybercrimes committed against the victim.

  • The cybercrime complaint could be filed online as well and registered on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal provided by the Government of India so as to facilitate a nationwide cybercrime complaint registration portal and to help people have an easy access to the cybercrime cells which provide people with the information related to cybercrimes at their fingertips.

  • There are two types of complaints registered on the portal-

i) Crimes related to-

  • Mobile crimes

  • Cyber trafficking

  • Social media crimes

ii) crimes against women and children-

  • Child Pornography

  • Child sexual abuse- containing sexually implicit images of a child who is abused or exploited

  • The complaint for a cybercrime related to women or children could be filed without providing legit information about the complainant himself and the status of the complaint could be tracked by logging in through the complaint ID.

  • A timely update of the investigation and the actions taken by the police are also provided to the complainant on his registered mobile number and email ID.

  • Also, it is recommended that the complainant should report the crime through the “report and track” option, as it would be helpful for the legal agencies to contact him/her further during the course of the investigation.

  • After registering the complaint is successfully, the complainant will have to choose the category of the kind of complaint to be filed such as CP/RGR/Sexually Explicit content, etc. and following details are required to be provided-

  1. Date and time of the incidents

  2. Platform where the incident took place, such as facebook, whatsapp, etc

  3. Upload evidence- images, videos, documents, etc.
